Updating

flockr does not self-update. Reinstall to update, then check the server with flockr status.

flockr does not update itself. To move to a new release, install it again with the method you used the first time.

flockr update

flockr update is still listed in flockr --help, but in flockr builds it stops with this message and changes nothing:

flockr does not self-update; pull and rebuild from source

Background update checks were removed in flockr 1.0.0. The command and its --handoff option (try a live handoff to the new binary after installing) are kept from herdr.

How to update

Installed withTo update
Install script (macOS, Linux)Run the install script again. It always fetches the latest release.
PowerShell (Windows)Run the PowerShell install command again.
miseUpgrade it through mise.
Release binaryDownload the new binary from the releases page and replace the old one.
Source buildgit pull, then build again.

The install commands are on the Install page.

After updating

A running server keeps using the old binary until it restarts. Check whether the client and server match:

flockr status

The update section of the output shows restart_needed and server_binary_stale. Add --json for scripts.

New releases can ship new integration hooks. List integrations whose installed hook is out of date, then reinstall those:

flockr integration status --outdated-only
flockr integration install claude

Release notes for each version are in CHANGELOG.md.

Stable and preview channels

flockr keeps herdr's update channel setting:

flockr channel show
flockr channel set stable
flockr channel set preview

flockr channel set writes the choice to [update] channel in config.toml. For a direct install it then runs the update step. Since flockr does not self-update, that step fails, and the setting has no effect on how you get new versions. flockr status shows the configured channel in its client section.
